MAKE YOUR OWN KOKEDAMA!

REQUIRED MATERIALS & Tools

Plant, Soil, Peat Moss, Twine, Nylon String or Wire, Sheet Moss, Scissors & Mixing Bowl, Hanging-Hook (optional)

1. Clear a Workspace

Clear out a spot for a workspace and cover it with something you can make a mess on (like old newspapers)

2. Mix It Up

Combine equal parts soil and peat moss in your mixing bowl. The average Kokedama ball is around 4”- 5” in diameter.

3. Make a Ball

Slowly add or spray 3/4 to 1 cup of water to the mixture while shaping it into a ball. You don’t want to get the soil too wet all at once, or it will be difficult to work with.

4. Add Your Plant

Once you’ve molded the ball, hold it in both hands and press one thumb into the top to make a hole for your plant’s roots. Transfer your rooted cutting or baby plant carefully into the ball. If you’d like to hang your Kokedama, this would be the time to insert the base of a hanging-hook into the ball.

5. Wrap It Up

Use twine and nylon or wire to wrap sheet moss around the ball. It can be a bit of a juggle, but it gets easier after a couple wraps. Cover the entire ball in sheet moss and wrap until you’re satisfied with how it looks. Tie off the end and you’re all set!

6. Display It!

Place your Kokedama somewhere nice with a bit of sunlight. Hang it if you included a hook, or place it on a coaster or stand to protect surfaces. Now you can sit back and enjoy your home-made living work of art!
