The Silence of War
Music by Taan & Haley Goodson
Lyrics by Barry Goodson
Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Through the night softly creeping
My enemy hopes to catch me sleeping
And the memory that was planted in my brain still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walk alone
Down jungle trails far from home
‘Neath the halo of a shadowed moon
A lingering shiver warned of doom
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of exploding light
Fades in the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the darkness light I saw
Ten thousand enemy, maybe more
People walking without speaking
Revealed by moonlight glistening
Minds writing songs no one could ever share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
“Fools” said I, “you do not know
Silence hides Marines below
Hear my words that I might teach you
Stop the harm and death I beseech you”
But my words like silent raindrops fell
As battle echoes swell
In silence
Later people bowed and prayed
Why’d I survive when bullets sprayed
And flashbacks hit without warning
Memories bringing forth mourning
And the warriors said “the words of the protests are written on the subway walls
In echoed halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence
