THE CRITR SERIES

A New Collaborative Series of Paint and Digital

Our process for this series is a bit like a game of Telephone - where one person passes information to another, who then interprets for another, and so on. We start by designing abstract CRITR templates that encourage artists to find their own unique interpretation. An artist chooses a design and recreates it however they like, in whatever media they choose.

The abstract forms aim to create open boundaries for an artist to express themselves without worrying about what they’re making. The results so far have been quite remarkable!

STEP 1: Digital CRITR Sketches

Designed by Taan Goodson, these digital doodles are created as an expression of the subconscious. Relying primarily on impulse, these CRITRs are made quickly with minimal conscious thought - creating forms that will hopefully spark unique thoughts to each viewer. CRITRs often look different from another angle. Try them upside down!

STEP 2: CRITR PAINTINGS

Our collaborative artists interpreted the assignment without direction and with only one directive: Keep the form of the CRITR.

“I find minimalist forms so refreshing and boundless, when I have the opportunity to do as I please with what texture or movement it might have. The great thing about simple forms is that you have a place to start and then your imagination takes off to what I would like them to be- an alien, a deep sea creature, a character in a story, etc. It is very therapeutical to let my thoughts wander outside the normal realm of busy everyday life. “ Artist and Fine Art Painter, Maryam Dalichau

“Galactic chaos floats beneath this tentacled critter. I saw it almost immediately- layers and layers of stars, planets, nebulae, dust and debris. Look for it.” Artist and philanthropist, Selah Burson

If you search for an outlet for your creativity and imagination, join us and make your own. We are happy to publish your creation if you want to interpret one of our CRITRs.
